RBT requirements in 2026

Eligibility checklist (RBT Handbook, June 2026)

Age: at least 18 when you submit the application.
Education: at least a high-school diploma or equivalent.
Background: pass a criminal background check and an abuse registry check no more than 180 days before paying for your application. Fingerprinting is not a BACB requirement, though states or employers may require it.
Attesting Certificant: a qualified certificant confirms the items above and signs the attestation no more than 90 days before you pay.
40-hour training: based on the RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline, completed in no fewer than 5 and no more than 180 days (start and end dates count). The BACB does not provide or endorse training programs.
Initial Competency Assessment (effective January 1, 2026): completed with an assessor after the training and no more than 90 days before you apply. The assessor cannot be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you.
Application: through your BACB portal account.
Exam: schedule with Pearson VUE once approved.

Fees are non-refundable. Qualifying veterans can seek GI Bill reimbursement for the exam fee.
